ASA torna in ottobre con l’album LUCID
La cantautrice nigeriana Asa annuncia il suo quarto album dal titolo LUCID in uscita l’11 ottobre via Wagram.

La simbologia è forte: la prima canzone nel disco di ASA, Murder in the USA, allude a un crimine: “Who’s gonna save me now / I shot my lover and I ran away”. Catarsi, ovviamente. Ma questa fine imponente è anche l’inizio dell’album. “I write in mirror image. I was in a destructive relationship. I hadn’t realised that this person was so toxic. If I continued to fall and fall some more, what would happen?”.
“In a way, this album is autobiographical. Even though I am not writing about myself, they are my thoughts, including my mistakes.”. E LUCID, il suo quarto album in uscita l’11 ottobre via Wagram, esplora tutto l’arco dei sentimenti emozionali, dal più delicato al più amaro e dal più amaro al distacco.
Le canzoni di ASA sono sempre ispirate alla vita. La sua, quella dei suoi amici e le storie che ha letto sul giornale: “I take a few notes, I keep the information in me and the music eventually starts flowing…”. Alcune volte l’ispirazione arriva improvvisamente, come inTorn:
“A dear friend had posted a photo on Instagram in which she looked sad. I called her and found out she was heartbroken and at the end of our conversation, she said: ” Asa, next time I will choose better who I open my heart to”. These words touched me. I was in Paris, in the midst of a heat wave, with a broken toilet, waiting for the plumber. I wrote the song and recorded the demo, belting out of the attic window. During the recording of the album, I never found the same emotion when recording in the studio with great microphones. So we kept the voice recorded in my attic of Paris.”
Abbiamo sempre immaginato che ASA fosse guidata più dall’istinto che dalla fredda purezza. Nel 2007, quando uscì il suo primo album, fu un plebiscito: un disco di platino, ilPrix Constantin, centinaia di concerti in giro per il mondo e l’album Live In Paris.
La storia mozzafiato di una rivelazione lontana da etichette e che mischia confini di generi, tra Europa, Africa e America, tra soul elegante e folk intuitivo, pop e dolce reggae, e canzoni ai limiti di tutto ciò.
Beautiful Imperfection fu pubblicato nel 2010, Bed of Stone nel 2014. Lei aveva bisogno di vivere la vita, riempire il suo animo e il suo cuore, così che ancora una volta, in un giorno d’estate, una canzone potesse abbattersi e raggiungere il cielo.
Questa spontaneità nasce da Marlon B, produttore del disco: “I call him “Mr Analogic”, wanted to preserve”, spiega Asa. “His studio is absolute perfection. He works in a very relaxed, natural atmosphere.”
Attorno a Marlon B, che ha suonato e programmato la batteria e le percussioni – “he is a drummer but knows all there is to know about a melody and arrangements” – la cremè dei musicisti parigini, virtuosi e precisi ascoltatori. E per la canzone “The Beginning”, che era nelle sue note vocali da cinque anni, un appuntamento con Patrice in Colonia ha sbloccato la situazione: “He added a beat that took the song to another level.”
L’intero album parla dell’amore in tutte le sue forme – dolore, gioia, piacere, chiusura. L’amore malizioso in Until We Try, una chiamata alla fiducia in You and Me e Stay Tonight, My Dear (Where Are You) – “It is a story that happened in India, I transposed it to Lagos.”
La città natale di ASA è anche una presenza in Happy People: “I wrote it with the people of Lagos Island in mind, like my uncle, who could not imagine living elsewhere…”.
ASA, in giro tra la sua casa in Lagos, il suo appartamento a Parigi e quello a Los Angeles, dice: ”My heart is in Lagos. But what I write is global. Lagos shaped my life, nothing is perfect there but it is so full of life”.
“I do not want to write and sing to go on stage and be under the spotlight. When I was little, all the people who were important to me quoted and repeated the words of artists that appealed to their emotions and situations. They aren’t only entertainers, their words had power. I always wanted my words to serve a purpose.”
E questo è il motivo per cui esplora quei sentimenti che tutti abbiamo provato nelle nostre vite – follemente, da ubriachi o schiantati dall’amore. Come sempre, da quando è entrata nella scena, come qualcosa tra una sorella rassicurante e una BFF comprensiva, cantando più delle nostre vite che della sua.
