FONTAINES D.C. “I Love You” è il nuovo singolo [Guarda il video]

Nuova musica per i Fontaines D.C.. La band irlandese ha pubblicato il video di I Love You il secondo singolo del loro terzo album, “Skinty Fia”, in uscita il 22 aprile Partisan Records.

Il brano arriva dopo uscita di Jackie Down The Line. 

LA CANZONE

Apparentemente una canzone d’amore, “I Love You” è stratificata, impressionista e intensa come la band. Il testo di quella che il frontman dei Fontaines D.C. Grian Chatten descrive come

la prima canzone apertamente politica che abbiamo scritto” è un lamento per l’Irlanda.

Scritta dal punto di vista di un irlandese all’estero, la canzone descrive il senso di colpa di un festaiolo da bar, che gode di un grande successo personale e di un senso di orgoglio culturale, mentre allo stesso tempo metabolizza una profonda delusione e rabbia per l’attuale clima politico e per le più cupe atrocità storiche del paese, come i decenni di tragica brutalità alla Mother and Baby Home di Tuam a Galway:

Quest’isola è gestita da squali con ossa di bambini conficcate nelle loro fauci”. Il video musicale, diretto da Sam Taylor, cattura tutta l’intensità della canzone.

L’ALBUM 

Skinty Fia è una frase irlandese che può essere tradotta come “la dannazione del cervo” e la copertina dell’album presenta appunto un cervo, strappato dal suo habitat naturale e inserito in una casa, illuminato da una luce rossa artificiale. Il cervo gigante irlandese è una specie estinta e i pensieri della band sull’identità irlandese sono al centro dell’album. Per una band la cui città natale scorre nelle loro vene – “D.C.” sta per “Dublin City” – l’album li vede cercare di risolvere il bisogno di ampliare i propri orizzonti con l’affetto che ancora provano per la terra e le persone che si sono lasciati alle spalle dopo il recentemente trasferimento a Londra.

Ci sono echi del rock ‘n’ roll di Dogrel e le atmosfere più cupe di A Hero’s Death, ma Skinty Fia è molto più ampio e cinematografico. I Fontaines D.C. sono una band in uno stato di costante evoluzione e questa volta il risultato è un album di stati d’animo mutevoli, intuizioni sorprendenti e maturità.
