Recensione: CHILDISH GAMBINO – “3.15.20”
53:49. Questa la durata del nuovo progetto sonoro di Donald Glover. Progetto si perchè chiamare disco questo “3.15.20” sarebbe abbastanza riduttivo.
Un composto unico e continuo ricco di sprazzi di genialità che prendono differenti forme sonore. Il disco non ha titoli dei brani (se non per tre canzoni), non ha riferimenti visivi in copertina ma si esprime solo attraverso liriche e beat. Una sorta di set infinito.
Il disco parte con una intro onirica e cosmica. Una apertura che porta al futuro digitale di Algorhythm, dove il beat oscuro quasi trip hop dell’inizio si apre strizzando l’occhio a più ripetizione verso suoni più soul e r&b (mi ricorda persino Prince!) .
La successiva Time, una sorta di gospel interstellare, è quella con il feat. “uncredited vocals” di Ariana Grande. Ce ne saranno degli altri nel disco: 21 Savage, Ink e Khadja Bonet.
Si passa subito dopo a 12.38 (quella con i feat, di 21 Savage e Khadja Bonet). L’inizio ti immerge in un beat tribale per poi portarti in uno stilosissimo soul ricco di falsetti e vociferare sensuale ed ammiccante, e poi il rap di 21 Savage spacca di brutto! Un brano da brividi che si chiude, dopo oltre sei minuti, in 19:10 beat industriale e sperimentale pieno di synth dove l’ispirazione di Prince è sempre più evidente.
24.19 è una love song di quasi otto minuti che termina con un battito che diventa quasi un beat dei Daft Punk e prosegue in 32.22 pezzo apocalittico e guerreiro.
Una atmosfera bucolica ci proietta nella successiva 35.31 , versione da fattoria di This is America che termina in un pezzo acapella quasi come un coro alla Queen!
La successiva è la conosciuta e già edita Feels Like Summer. A seguire 47.48 traccia funk sperimentale che vede una riflessione sull’ascesa della violenza e il ruolo dei social media nella nostra società. L’outro presenta una tenera conversazione sull’amore tra Donald e suo figlio Legend.
Il disco si conclude con un beat possente e sincopato che vede Gambino alternarsi tra rap, cantato e falsetto.
The artist formally known as Childish Gambino mi sembra sia sempre più l’erede di Prince.
