Recensione: MICHAEL KIWANUKA – Kiwanuka
Immaginatevi la leggerezza pop di Bill Withers che incontra la poesia Gil Scott-Heron e il soul di Otis Redding il tutto attualizzato ai nostri giorni: eccovi servito il terzo album di Michael Kiwanuka, “KIWANUKA”.
Un disco con uno spessore e una profondità difficile da trovare nelle produzioni odierne.
Un soul potente che attraversa si insinua e pervade con la sua potenza lirica e musicale. Un disco suonato, cantato e pensato. Un piglio cinematografico e al tempo stesso orchestrale che offre assoli di chitarra come esternazioni al piano. Melodie moderne cariche di echi vintage, eleganti, fascinosi e ambientali.
Quasi tutti i brani hanno una loro “intro” e interludi, un momento di esternazione e di sperimentazione voluta quasi per preparare all’ascolto.
Sotto il profilo lirico ritornano i temi che hanno caratterizzato i lavori precedenti, vale a dire la messa in discussione della propria identità, ma anche della speranza e del potere. Michael ha trascorso l’ultimo anno a il disco scrivere , scandagliando la propria vita come se la osservasse attraverso la lente di un microscopio.
Raccogliamo un suo pensiero…
L’album precedente proveniva da un luogo introspettivo come fosse stato una terapia, credo. Quest’ultimo disco invece rispecchia il sentirmi a mio agio per quello che sono. Come potrei essere audace e sfidare me stesso e l’ascoltatore? Si tratta di auto-accettazione in un modo più trionfante che malinconico. E’ un album che esplora cosa significa essere un essere umano oggi. Quando ho firmato per la prima volta un contratto discografico, la gente mi chiedeva: “Allora, come ti chiameranno?”. E non ci ho mai pensato: chiamarmi Johnny Thunders o quello che è, come i cantanti del passato. Questo album è qualcosa di provocatorio; mi sto impegnando per quello che sono e non voglio avere un alter ego, o diventare Sasha Fierce o Ziggy Stardust, anche se tutti mi dicono che devo essere questo, quello o l’altro. Posso semplicemente essere Michael Kiwanuka”.
Artistica è anche la cover dell’album dipinta da Markeidric Walker, giovane artista di Atlanta.
Come concludere. Io non riesco più a staccarmi dall’ascolto.
