Recensione: THE STROKES – “The New Abnormal”
Ho terminato l’ascolto di The New Abnormal degli Strokes poco prima di iniziare un webinar sui Beatles. (Mai fare queste cose, ricordatelo per la prossima volta).
La parola che l’insegnante ha usato di più per descriverne il lavoro dei Fab Four è “varietà’. Un disco come Abbey Road contiene 17 pezzi, e nessuno assomiglia all’altro. Ora, sarebbe ingiusto partire da un paragone tra le due band per descrivere l’ultimo album degli Strokes. Non è quello che intendiamo fare. Mica si può paragonare Dio ai comuni mortali, anche se questi ultimi sono i meno comuni tra i comuni, i fautori di un sound tutto nuovo che ormai vent’anni fa fece letteralmente il botto e ci sconvolse tutti, indie maniaci e non, con “Is This It”, il primo album della band. Eppure, colpa dei Beatles o no, dobbiamo dirlo: “The New Abnormal” suona come qualcosa di molto poco new, e nemmeno tanto abnormal. Tutto assolutamente ordinario. E un tantino ripetitivo.
L’album, tutto sommato, si presta ad un ascolto piacevole. Appena partirà “The Adults Are Talking” penserete “Bentornati, ci siete mancati tantissimo”, ma l’altra metà del cervello, forse quella meno emotiva, noterà che gli Strokes sono rimasti esattamente come li avevamo lasciati, nonostante “At The Door” ci avesse fatto presagire qualche cambiamento sostanziale. Illusione. “The New Abnormal” è un semplice prolungamento di “Angles” e di quello che c’era prima: ormai quel sound stratosferico imita se stesso e non è capace di trovare nuove vie per esprimersi. Sebbene il disco non sia affatto da cestinare: è una versione nuova di qualcosa di già sentito, con qualche piccolo guizzo di semi-novità. Per esempio, la voce di Casablancas meno alterata da effetti e distorsioni, meno sporca, suona più nitida e naturale e si spinge persino ad audaci falsetti (vedi “Eternal Summer”).
Vediamola così: i difetti degli Julian & Co sono i loro punti di forza. Nonostante sia facile pensare quanto “The New Abnormal” suoni come l’ennesimo album degli Strokes, è difficile rimanere turbati, o scossi, tanto meno innervositi. Personalmente ho provato una malinconica felicità, mi sono beata e goduta l’ascolto al 100%: i soliti riff riconoscibili, il solito synth preponderante, i soliti anni Ottanta. Andava benissimo così.
