Tornano i THE WATERBOYS il nuovo album il 21 agosto
I The Waterboys, tra band più creative ed adorate delle ultime quattro decadi, sono pronti a tornare con ‘Good Luck, Seeker’, il nuovo album di studio, il quattordicesimo, in arrivo il 21 agosto.
In the old days, I’d write a song, book a studio and assemble musicians to play. It could be a very dry way of working. These days, I walk into my studio, open up the computer, and I’ve always got something cooking. It’s like stepping into absorption, and it produces magic” afferma Mike Scott, prolifico singer-songwriter, polistrumentista, band leader e produttore.
Registrato durante il lockdown nello studio di casa di Mike a Dublino, il nuovo lavoro mostra la formazione in ottima forma: Scott inviava le tracce agli altri componenti della band, i quali aggiungevano parti dal loro home studio che, una volta rimandate a Scott, venivano nuovamente manipolate.
I’m like a kid in a toy shop, I’m having fun all the time. This album was almost accidental. I was just making music, and suddenly realised I’d made an album” continua il frontman.
Dall’esuberante ‘The Soul Singer’ con cui si apre il disco, fino all’elegiaca ‘The Land Of Sunset’, ‘Good Luck, Seeker’ riunisce tutti gli elementi caratteristici di The Waterboys, popolando i brani di leggende soul, stelle del cinema di Hollywood, maniaci non pentiti, fuorilegge e mistici del XX secolo.
Ispirato dai Rolling Stones, Kate Bush, Sly e Kendrick, Scott ha fatto irruzione nel suo catalogo di registrazioni e testi per anni accantonati, aggiungendo tamburi groovy, assoli di chitarre, violini fiammeggianti ed organi sgargianti, tra visioni epiche, drammi oscuri ed il tocco pop tipico della musica British. In parte diario, in parte epica avventura sotto forma di parole, ‘Good Luck, Seeker’ è al tempo stesso il disco finale di una trilogia già anticipata da ‘Out Of All This Blue’ e ‘Where The Action Is’, ed una nuova partenza per Mike Scott ed i suoi compagni di avventura.
L’album si divide in due parti e la seconda metà è un viaggio mistico tra il parlato di Scott:
I still think in terms of side one and two, so the first side is all songs, a musical diary of what’s grabbing my attention.” But if the listener metaphorically flips the record, they will hear the voice of Mike Scott leading them into “a more esoteric, philosophical world.”
Mike Scott deve la sua abilità allo ‘spoken word’ a Bob Dylan: nel 1986 Dylan gli regalò una musicassetta, certo che se ne sarebbe innamorato. Era una registrazione di John Trudell, un poeta nativo americano ed attivista politico che diede alla luce numerosi album parlati prima della sua morte nel 2015.
Ci sono stati periodi in cui essere il leader di una band come The Waterboys non è certo stato facile, ma il viaggio spirituale raccontato da ‘Good Luck, Seeker’ ha permesso a Mike Scott di respirare creatività e libertà artistica:
I just do what I like and enjoy myself doing it, which is the ideal I think.” It is an attitude that is helpful in uncertain times. “I think the next time we will we get on the road, virus willing, will be the summer of 2021. This record will be almost a year old by then, but that’s OK. People will want to see The Waterboys, we will want to tour, and there’s a bunch of songs on this record that are going to be great live.”
